What is Spyware?
|
If you cruise the internet and download programs and files without
knowing
about spyware you are quite likely to have an infected computer. There may be
no sign of the infection or there may be many annoying signs: pop-up ads,
browser hijackings, slow loading of pages; you may even find mysterious
charges on your phone bill or credit cards. Some people think that cookies are
spyware and should always be avoided. Most cookies
are harmless and make using the internet easier - for
logins on sites where you have an account for example, or the cookie that adds
things to your shopping cart. The cookie that opens
your email account when you type in your password is one you probably don't
mind having. Cookies are usually small harmless text files - but not always.
There are other types of files that can get onto your system and
they are not so harmless. They keep track of where you go and what sites you
visit, what ads you click on and report back on your activity without your
knowledge. Other malicious files come in hidden with downloads of online
music, amusements and games. Some are downloaded disguised as "Toolbars" or
"Helpers", even little Smilies for your email. Some of these files can even
track every letter and number you type and send it secretly back to another
computer. Sometimes these
files cause annoying pop-up ads and even take you to visit sites that you do
not want to visit. The internet is a wonderful place full of fun and
interesting people and places but there are
some who use the internet for malicious purposes and we need to be ready when
we run into them.
Just learning about spyware puts you one step ahead but since it doesn't come
with warning signs, just knowing about it won't protect you. First you should
find out what kind of spyware is already on your system.
Nearly everyone has some form of spyware even page counters are a minor form of
spyware. Other, more harmful files can be hidden on your sytem without
your knowledge and you can find out what they are and how to get rid of them at
no cost to you.
