final cut for making the racks
A First Cut is Made in the Wood for Domino Racks

The GRR-Ripper® is used here to guide the wood securely against the fence while the domino racks are cut in solid Mahogany.
This picture shows the first cut in a rack blank to make racks. The fence is set just under 1/4" from the blade at 3/16". The block used to make these racks is 1 3/16" x 1 3/16" and they can be any convenient length. For this first cut the depth of cut is 1 1/16". The blade is at a 20 degree angle to make this cut. Notice how the GRR-Ripper® safely keeps your hands and fingers away from the blade while securely guiding the wood through the blade path. This GRR-Ripper® has been fitted with a custom tailpiece that we'll show you in a different picture in this series.

Thanks to Alvin in New York for reminding me that I left out some details. I do appreciate the feedback and it makes these pages more useful to everyone. People use all kinds of equipment for woodworking and these measurements are for typical OEM saw setups. If you have a nice, precise Incra® Precision Fence the fence is set at 7/32".

TIPS: If your skills and equipment allow it, the easiest results (if you are using safety equipment like the GRR-Ripper® to push your stock) is 3x the length of the racks you want to make plus 1/4" for kerf. Allow more if your blank has loose knots or flaws you want to cut out later. If you do not have this kind of safety equipment, better to stick to the length you feel comfortable controlling, never less than one rack length plus 1/32" to allow enough stock to finish end grain smoothly.

The GRR-Ripper® Helps to Make Work Safer

Your Shop Safety is important, precision stock handling is important too. The GRR-Ripper is the simplest solution for guiding your work on a router or table saw without risking slippage of a featherboard, it gives you more complete control. Choose the Basic or Advanced Models and add accessories as you learn the versatility of this great tool. For about the price of an average saw blade, you could be working much safer than you are.
