final cut for making the racks
Using the GRR-Ripper® to Cut Domino Racks

This picture shows the final cut to make racks. Because the first and second cut require adjustment to the blade tilt it is easier to cut all of the first cuts and then all of the final cuts. The cutting depth for the second cut is 3/4" and the saw blade is tilted to 30 degrees for this cut, (29 degrees if you have precision equipment) but you can feel free to cut your racks your way. The fence is set at 5/8" or 9/16" depending on whether you are using a regular or thin kerf blade on the saw. You can make racks any length you want, we usually made them 36" - 38" long to leave allowance for the loss when separating each rack and for smooth sanding the grain ends. If you start with just the right length for finished racks, they can be very hard to handle for sawing. After completing the two angled cuts for the cutout, you can cut them down to final length for sanding and finishing.

Thanks to Pamela for reminding me that I left out some details on the fence settings. I do appreciate the feedback and it makes these pages more useful to everyone.

TIPS: If your skills and equipment allow it, try to leave a fine connection and not cut completely through to the first cut when you are making the second cut. This will leave you an easy to remove cutout piece, rather than having a loose cutout that can be hard to control as the second cut is completed. Keep your cutout piece to use for sanding. Wrap a piece of quarter sheet sandpaper around the cutout piece and you will have a perfectly shaped sanding block for that job.
